MSc in Mathematical Sciences and MMath in Mathematics Handbook (2025-26)
4. The Masters Course
4.4. Work Distribution
Students are advised that it is likely to work well if you take four units in Michaelmas Term, and a further two units in Hilary Term, when you will also be working on your dissertation. If you choose to take a course assessed by mini-project in Michaelmas Term, the mini-project will be available from Friday of Week 8 with a submission deadline of 12noon on Wednesday of Week -1 Hilary Term. Hilary Term mini-projects will be released on Friday of Week 8, with a submission deadline of Wednesday of Week -1 Trinity Term. It is not anticipated the mini-projects will take all this time: the projects are designed to be completed in 3–4 days, although further preparation and revision may be needed beforehand. Dissertation topics will be circulated very early in the course, and you will be expected to choose a topic in Michaelmas Term and to begin some preliminary work then. You will also work on the dissertation in Hilary Term and over the Christmas and Easter vacations. The dissertations will be submitted in early Trinity Term. You will then focus on revising for the written examinations, which are at the end of Trinity Term.
