5. Teaching and Learning

5.3. Classes

Lecture courses will normally be accompanied by four 90 minute classes which will be run by the class tutor. For each class, there will be a corresponding problem sheet. Students will be expected to submit their solutions for problem sheet 1 and 3 for marking by the tutor, or an assigned marker, prior to the class.

The aim of the classes is to address the problem sheets set by the course lecturer and any other questions that have arisen from the course material. The first class will normally be in either week 2 or 3 of each term, thus, you should be thinking about starting to work on the sheets early on.

The formative feedback you will receive in the classes will help to prepare you for the formal assessments, which will be used to assess your overall performance on the course.

For courses in the Mathematical Institute you will need to sign up for the set of classes you wish to attend at the start of each term, and this is done via our course materials site (Moodle). You will be sent an email in week 0 alerting you that class registration is open and providing you with details of the  registration process. You can find out which class you have been allocated to by looking at the class lists at https://courses.maths.ox.ac.uk/.

For courses in the Department of Statistics, class sign up at the start of each term will use TMS, the University’s Teaching Management System (https://tms.ox.ac.uk/). You will be sent an email in week 0 alerting you that class registration is open and providing you with details of the registration process. You can look on TMS to find out which classes you have been allocated to.

Permission to attend classes organised by the Department of Computer Science listed in Schedule C1 (see https://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/teaching/mcs/PartC/) must be requested by completing the online form on the individual course page by 5pm on Friday of week 0 of the term in which the course is taught. All requests will be considered by the Department of Computer Science’s Undergraduate Supervisory Committee, and students will be notified of the Committee’s decision. Students who are given permission to take a course for credit will be given access to Computer Science systems to enable them to sign up for classes and practicals where applicable.
