Course overview:
The mathematical modelling classes form an essential part of the MSc course and take place in weeks 5-8. The classes introduce the students to the art of addressing real-world challenges using mathematics. The classes will mix lecture-style delivery with hands-on building, analysing and solving mathematical models, and interpretation of results. Working in small groups, students will learn how to approach a real problem, how to break it down into manageable parts and how to set up a model that contains the key elements of the problem. The first two weeks will focus on bite-sized models, while the final two weeks will involve a larger challenge in a specific application area (infectious disease modelling).
